ST@ST : The Firefighter

Ab iss recession ke time par, I have another vocation to turn to-apart from engineering and Saddi Cycle shop.

Last week ST conducted a 'Fire Safety Training ' for the new employees and trainees. It was conducted by an ex-Army officer who is In-charge (Security) at the Greater Noida establishment.

It was basically a presentation to be followed by a practical session. The presentation was quite informative, covering basic concepts of fire, fire-safety, how to handle a fire extinguisher, precautions during earthquakes, what to do in case of a snake bite and basic first aid. But we were all looking forward to the practical session.

In the first part, a small fire was lit in a drum and we had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Because we were about 15-20 people, and if everybody had to get a hands-on-experience, it would be difficult to light up the fire so many times after it gets put out using water. So what we did was to use a wrong type of fire extinguisher, which would not actually extinguish the fire. (dimaag laga bhai ;) ). It was a great experience actually using an extinguisher.

In the next part, we were given a demonstration of extinguishing a fire using a hose pipe that is used by fire engines etc to put out fires that engulf higher floors of a building. And then we were told that we could have a go at it too. The pressure was immense, in fact if you let go, you can seriously injure somebody. It is very difficult for a single person to control the hose at full pressure. In fact the guards who have to learn firefighting also had trouble controlling the full force.

Finally we were shown all the fire exit in the building.

To ab agar naukri nahi lagi…to bhi mera future 'HOT' hai, Fire department mein to naukri laga loonga. :P
